THE PURPOSE OF CHILDREN OF THE WORLD 2000 ... is to educate children and young people about peace, respect for one another whatever the colour of their skin or the God they worship, tolerance, care for the environment and many other core virtues that are essential for a peaceful world.  CoTW2000 is a not for profit organization recognized by the UN and UNESCO.  We are engaged in initiatives that bridge the religious divide in Northern Ireland for example involving the children and young people. We have been active in the Children’s Peace Garden projects in Ireland and Greece.  Another project is joining a team of consultants involved with a Children’s Trauma Centre in Afghanistan and assisting with fundraising.  In Southern Africa together with our partners who include S.H.E (Shelter, Healthcare and Education Charity, Nigeria) and the Child Evangelism Fellowship we are active in the AIDS/HIV awareness campaign and providing funding for children affected by AIDS.  HRH Prince Frederick von Saxe-Lauenberg President-Founder of CoTW2000 will be a guest on the cruise being organized by the radio station in April 2004.  Children of the World 2000 launched a fundraising campaign in November 2003 the target being $2 million and these funds will be used to endow the organization. CoTW2000 was incorporated in the Year 2000 to raise funds for humanitarian programs world wide. We have provided books for schools in Africa, medical equipment to orphanages in Eastern Europe, artificial limbs for children in Chechnya, toys for children in Africa and so on.  In East Timor there is a children’s vaccination programs supervised by UNICEF and the World Health Organization and we are assisting with the fundraising. Prince Frederick will be looking forward to meeting fellow passengers on the cruise next year.

HRH PRINCE FREDERICK VON SAXE-LAUENBERG
is the Founder, President of Children of the World 2000. Prince Frederick has been involved in peace activism since the early 80's. After leaving university the prince joined the family firm, which was an import-export business and was also involved in publishing. His present work is as a World Peace Emissary and is a Fellow of the International Institute of Peace Studies & Global Philosophy. He has a moral passion in serving the cause of peace and humanity. "I always have this saying in mind when I go out on my missions for peace: - ' Wars are the stains of shame which centuries will not wash away and we cannot redress the wrongdoings of mankind, what we can do is educate those who will one day inherit the earth from us and teach them the values of peace, universal understanding and the joy of
global friendship.' "

Children of the World 2000 is initiating two Children' Peace Gardens in Derry, Northern Ireland and Pieria, Northern Greece. The Prime Minister of Ireland recognizes and appreciates the work Prince Frederick has done for children in Northern Ireland. The Nobel Peace Laureates David Trimble MP, John Hume MP and Mairead Corrigan-Maguire are honoured to be working with the prince on the Children of the island of Ireland Peace Gardens initiative. Boutros Boutros Ghali former UN Secretary General described Prince Frederick as "committed, devoted, courageous and with conviction in his selfless pursuit of a greater peace in the world." Mr. Koffi Annan the present UN  secretary General recognizes the valuable work Children of the World 2000 has done for the world's children. The President is also served as Patron of the Child Evangelical Fellowship ( South Africa ) and was nominated for an award in recognition of his work with children affected by AIDS/HIV. Prince Frederick has recently been appointed as a Patron of the Chernobyl Children's Lifeline UK.Children of the World 2000 was created as an active non-governmental-organization in the late 1980's following the successful global fund raising campaign by the Band Aid Trust for Famine Relief in 1985/6. . . . The prince was one of a large team of fundraisers working for the International Red Cross - Red Crescent projects in the Sudan. "I decided to go into the business of famine relief following the shocking revelations coming out of Ethiopia that millions of children were starving and dying as a result of war and the actions of a government who couldn’t care less. My aunt was terribly moved by this and sprung into action raising funds for the Ethiopian crisis in the Netherlands one of the first countries to react and come to the aid of those who cried for help. "I had been born into privilege and had come from a comfortable home. The Ethiopian crisis changed the course of my life. Ever since I have been advocating that those of us who have come from similar circumstances do their best and help to create a better world for the children of tomorrow." On the 11th of September 2003 HRH Prince Frederick visited Costa Rica as part of a distinguished group from the International Peace Garden Foundation. Whilst the prince was in San Jose he to met with the President, members of the Cabinet and other dignitaries. "Costa Rica is a rarity in the global village. It has had no standing army since 1948. Dr Oscar Arias who I have great respect for is one of those statesmen who deserved the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987. On the day he took office, the presidents of nine Latin American countries met in San Jose with Dr Arias as Chairman.   Arias called for a continental alliance for the defense of democracy and liberty. He firmed that all Central Americans were entitled to the same liberties and social and economic guarantees of democracy, that each nation had the right to free and fair elections, the type of government that represented the views of the people and that neither armies nor dictatorships were entitled to make this decision. Costa Rica under the leadership of Dr Arias was the symbol of hope for peace in the region and Dr Arias is to  congratulated for his relentless struggle to achieve those worthy goals. He drafted a peace plan to end the regional crisis and for that he won the Nobel Peace Prize. This is perhaps one of the reasons Costa Rica was nominated to receive the International Peace Garden." The prince is also co-chair of the Creative Forum for Peace that hopefully will take place in late 2004. "The Creative Forum's paramount objectives are to create climates of peace around the world eventually linking up forming an unbreakable chain of communities who are all demanding peace and tranquility wherever they are. " I have heard this saying: Earth comes first, Mankind second. This is in response to many calls by children and young people to save our planet and the concern out there is very serious. In order to gain world peace we have to seriously attend to the matters surrounding the condition of Mother Earth. If she disintegrates then that will be the fault of mankind and we will have no home, no globe. The wars and other conflicts are seriously damaging the earth along with the environmental damage that humans are doing, so we have to educate and teach our children of today so that they will pass on the knowledge to their children and so on...... "I have received a calling from above to work with the children of the world who demand the attention of those in authority and a commitment from them to cooperate with them if they expect the world to be a safer place in the future."
In respect for diversity lie the seeds of harmony. T.E.A.M Together Everyone Achieves More

"FIRST WORLD CREATIVE FORUM ON CONFLICT RESOLUTION & ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION"
The First World Creative Forum on Conflict Resolution & Environmental Education - 1st to the 5th of October, 2006.

OBJECTIVE:

The First World Creative Forum will offer workshops from presenters across the globe showcasing practical, viable programmes that may be used in any part of the world in order to prepare future generations for a world of peace and environmental protection The theme is Peace and we will discuss how to establish permanent support to change the world through our children and youth.  The objective is a new direction for citizens of the global village to follow to achieve peace and prosperity.

MISSION:

To share ongoing world programmes that prepare children, youth, teachers, parents and communities to achieve a world of peace.

Bordering Panama and Nicaragua, with coasts on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica hosts an amazing wealth of biodiversity. An estimated four percent of the world’s species can be found within its borders, though Costa Rica’s 19,652 square miles represent just a tiny fraction of the planet’s land mass. With more than 200 mammal species, 214 reptiles, 130 fish, 168 amphibians, 600 birds and over 12,000 different plant species, Costa Rica is a biodiversity mecca. As variable in terrain as it is in natural beauty, the country contains both tropical and subtropical climates with landscapes ranging from coastal plains to rugged mountains. Costa Rica is also a hotbed of volcanic activity with100 volcanic cones and several active volcanoes.

As with any area that contains wealth of natural resources, balancing peoples’ need to make a living with their desire to preserve biodiversity is a complex issue. Air and coastal pollution, agriculture, -- which occupies about 45% of the land in Latin America -- and solid waste management are but some of the threats to the Earth’s equilibrium in this part of the world.

Costa Rica is exemplary in its measures to combat one of Latin America's highest deforestation rates. A quarter of the country is protected park land, and the beauty found in these preserves draw millions of visitors each year.

To ensure sustainable use within areas of critical natural importance, the government’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy (MINAE) has created the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), a network consisting of eleven areas with sustainability-oriented management plans.

One example is the Osa Conservation Area, which includes a remarkable variety of ecosystems including cloud forests, mangroves, marine ecosystems, and even a tropical fjord. An estimated half of the country’s biodiversity -- including the endangered jaguar, ocelot, scarlet macaw, and the Pacific green sea turtle -- is found in this region.

Another area central to national conservation efforts is La Amistad/ Talamanca within the Talamanca mountain range in south-central Costa Rica. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1982, this area contains one of the largest tracts of virgin rainforest in all of Central America. As a result, it is also home to several endangered species including the giant anteater, as well as several notable birds such as the harpy eagle and the resplendent quetzal. Roughly 25,000 people reside in the area, relying on traditional subsistence methods to earn their livelihoods.

A third area of great importance is the Guanacaste Conservation Area. Located in the northwest and covering over 400 square miles, its designation as a conservation area serves to protect varying ecosystems including evergreen and cloud forests. Protected status provides a safe haven for migratory animals native to the region, which is home to several species of monkeys, over 300 bird species and over 10,000 insect species.

The Tortuguero Conservation Area, along the Caribbean shore is also critical to conservation efforts. Tortuguero, or “turtle catcher” is one of the largest nesting areas on the planet for the green sea turtle as well as several other turtle species and crocodiles, bull sharks and manatees. The area includes Tortuguero National Park, Barra del Colorado Wildlife Reserve and Tortuguero Protected Area

It is the intention of the First World Creative Forum on Conflict Resolution and Environmental Education to highlight the work of other non-governmental-agencies such as the Rainforest Alliance who work in Costa Rica for example.

The event will have several initiatives being presented over a number of days.   The Forum will carry on for five days of intense peace and environmental education workshops and three days of dialogue and materials and ideas sharing with like-minded groups.

At the end of the Forum, the participants will be trained in programmes, know and evaluate teaching materials and create permanent support systems that may help to transform our everyday violent world into a compassionate one free of racism, hatred, violence and misunderstanding.

Working models seek to improve greater harmony, improve inter faith relations, empower people and include successful examples of community regeneration.

Our work is timely, as wars for natural resources, ethnic conflict and religious hatred continue to be” tinderboxes” around the world. We are also looking into alternative means for addressing what is perhaps the most impossible of all and that is to secure a permanent peace in the world. There will be people from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds meeting in San Jose and making connections, to educate and be educated, to empower and effect real change in the world.

The UN was created in 1945 after WWII with the objective to prevent war or conflict from ever happening again anywhere on Mother Earth but what the founders hadn’t realized was there were those nation states bent on doing the complete opposite.     Processes to achieve the worthy and great goals of a world at peace have to the ordinary man and woman in the street been exhausted and new ideas are being explored and debated.  The First World Creative Forum it is hoped will be more than just a talking shop: tried and tested programmes from many parts of the world, new approaches and ideas will be presented, and delegates will depart with new goals to aim for.

Politicians try to find immediate answers to problems that are ultimately impossible to solve. Diplomats are skilled in negotiation especially in the art of international relations.  The two combined can try to bring solutions to those problems. But what happened in 1989 at the United Nations was unprecedented in its history. The leaders of the world came to their senses and realized that they needed the help of the children and young people of the world to determine a workable solution to the world’s problems so the first ever World Summit of Children was convened in 1990.  A catastrophe in Africa involving the deaths of tens of thousands of children was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The war in Ethiopia was the turning point that woke up the world’s leaders and triggered their move to ask for the co-operation of the children in their fresh approach to solving the impossible.

UNESCO’S sponsored Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non Violence towards the Children of the World, may have not changed the fact that the world is still suffering from wars, terrorism and conflicts. However, it continues to encourage thousands of peace educators and peace activists throughout the world, to persist with their work towards finding and establishing a culture of peace.

Where are these programmes? What results have they achieved?  How to receive training will be the main focus of the First World Creative Forum.

PRESENTERS

The Forum is pleased to invite those engaged with existing, successful community working models to present their model in workshop form.  They would offer those attending knowledge and skills which are tailored so that the individual may acquire the tools to return to his/her community with the ability to replicate this model and build ongoing community bridges.

Areas of interest include education, civic responsibility, peace education, culture, environment and global ethics.  A requirement of the workshop is that it be ‘result-based’. Many already successful community projects have accumulated a wealth of experience that is ready to be offered to others who have the desire and commitment to extend the process.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES
CHILDREN OF THE WORLD 2000

MOTTO:
“T.E.A.M. Together Everyone Achieves More

Children of the World 2000 was created in 1988 out of Cartoon Aid (U.K.) a recognized fundraising concern for the International Committee for the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Cartoon Aid was assisting with the global fundraising activities of the Band Aid Trust for Famine Relief. Children of the World 2000 was a concept designed by Cartoon Aid and appointed Prince Frederick v. Saxe-Lauenberg as Vice President with responsibility for C o T W  2000. The principle activity is the fostering of friendships between the youth of the nations of the world creating initiatives that appeal to the young i.e. summits that bring youngsters together in a spirit of peace, friendship and reconciliation. 2000 – 2010 has been declared by UNESCO as the Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non -Violence Towards the Children of the World and it is our purpose to contribute in some way to this worthwhile cause.

One of the aims of Children of the World 2000 is to organise a world-wide cartoon-drawing competition focusing on peace and/or develop an international essay writing contest, the subjects being: Peace & Reconciliation – the winners being invited to participate at a World Forum. Projects lined up include the Creative Forum for Peace and Social Change in Costa Rica in 2004 which will seek ways to transform/change our everyday violent world into a compassionate one free of violence, war, racism, hatred and misunderstanding.   Also we will be participating in several forums and summits around the world. C o T W 2000 has the goodwill and support of Mr Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations and Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary General of The Commonwealth.

We have supported the aims of the Young General Assembly an initiative conceived by Peaceways, a registered non-governmental-organization in the United States that is recognised by the UN and UNESCO.  Also we are active in the Far East, Central America and Africa financing projects to make life better for children and their communities.

We try not to get embroiled in political disputes and remain neutral but to gain assistance in the many countries we deal with we need to have a dialogue with the Governments and their diplomatic missions worldwide.

Ever since the first-ever World Summit for Children in New York (1990) organised by the UN and UNICEF various n.g.o.s have been working to formalise a structure that would enable the youth of the world to work closely with the UN.

Children of the World 2000 and others such as Peaceways are aiming to consolidate that idea, having young representatives attend a permanent Young General Assembly in New York or other location i.e. Geneva in Switzerland.

The ultimate wish of every human being is Peace and the only way to a peaceful, better world is through our children. In Athens during Olympic year 2004 a Children’s Peace Summit is being organized.  This event will display to the world a huge multicultural diversity of young people living and interacting together in a cohesive and harmonious group whose main purpose is to contribute to the world-wide activities of others in praying for a lasting Peace.

The goal of Children of the World 2000 is to educate future generations on the values of being good neighbors, trusting friendships and living together in peace.

Also we are focusing on the removal of racial & religious prejudice by teaching youngsters from a very early age to respect one another whatever their religion or the colour of their skin. We’re all alike, there are those who are being persecuted, tortured or killed because of the tribe you belong to or the God you worship – Nazi Germany, Northern Ireland and Kosovo are examples of ethnic cleansing, racial hatred and religious prejudice. The children will be taught the history and consequences for humanity if this goes on.  At our Summits, Forums and meetings young delegates endeavour to address the aforementioned goals – these and  other issues will be the most important challenges facing humanity as we start the Third Millennium.

Another project we are actively engaged in is the planting of the Children of Ireland Peace Garden in Northern Ireland, the garden will be a venue for children and adults to visit from all over the world.  It is the plan to institute an annual award to children who promote peace within their community.

We are also pursuing the idea of doing a Children’s Peace Garden project in Northern Greece in the foothills of Mount Olympus.

The present generation must take the lead and initiate a code of compliance in step with the demands of the worlds’ children. The Peace Garden will focus on the need to reach a lasting peace in Ulster and embrace the philosophy of talking rather than fighting. The Peace Garden in Greece will show the children’s hope for a peaceful world and the connection to the Athens Olympics makes this initiative all the more significant.

The YGA initiative, the Creative Forum for Peace, Conscious Action and Social Change 2004 and other projects shall fulfil the aspiration of focusing the attentions of nations on the need to give priority to our children to whom we must hand over a more humane world infused with sensitivity.

Children represent the fragility of humanity; they are the symbol for a peaceful future – if we accept that universally then what a wonderful world it would be.  Forums and seminars co-organised by Children of the World have been well - attended and one delegate said “We are not future leaders, we are the leaders now, so let’s get going because we’ve got a whole world to change.”  Another youngster remarked: “ We are the children of today and we must help the children of tomorrow by changing the world – the answer lies in our hands.

” Let us learn from this quotation: “In respect for diversity lie the seeds of harmony.”

MISSION STATEMENT
Children of the World 2000

We affirm that our organization is founded on a noble ideal; that every person has the capacity to perform deeds that are both good and great and that in the light of such deeds humankind is reminded of the best that we might become.

The children and the youth of the world are now empowered to take action and demand that the governments of the world listen to them as they are the future and they have been given the right to be heard by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990. That right was confirmed at the Millennium Summit of Heads of State & Government in New York in August,2000.

It is the declaration of our members and of our partners that we promise to jointly commit ourselves to assisting with the challenge to make the world a more peaceful and better place to live for our children and future generations. Children are innocent, precious, vulnerable and dependent.  Full of activity, curiosity and hope they expect to grow and develop in peaceful and joyous surroundings. It is expected that the future will be a harmonious one for the generations to come and to that end Children of the World 2000 will endeavour to play its part in securing that aim.

Our principles define what we hold to be right. In all that we do or say will be guided by the core virtues of our noble ideal which are:

Striving for Peace in the World

Respecting the fundamental and essential dignity of all people whatever the colour of their skin or the God they worship,

Treating others as we would like to be treated,

Working to develop mutual understanding and friendship,

Respecting Human Rights,

Trusting one another…

These principles show what we are aspiring to achieve.

Children represent the fragility of humanity, they are the symbol for a peaceful future – if we accept that universally then what a wonderful world it would be. Let us learn from this quotation: “In respect for diversity lie the seeds of harmony.”
